Description

Back to school night. Some year around 3rd or 4th grade. It was a memory Drew hadn't really remembered, lost in time from its lack of impact and enigmatic ending.

Little by little the details of the florescent-lighted evening came trickling back in the way memories typically didn't. Parents and children walked out of classrooms, hand in hand and chattering away. The walk to the parking lot was quiet. A young girl's eyes perused the crowd. Something didn't add up.
"..mama? Question." Her voice started tentatively, unsure of itself.
"hmm? Yes? What's the matter, dear?" She bent down to address her daughter, hair still vibrant and skin still without wrinkle or imperfection. A very young and proper lady. Moonlight twinkled in her soft sea foam eyes as she knelt.
"well....everyone else has got two parents..so...why's it just you?" The girl did not know whether to ask or not, yet still she did. Perhaps she was too young to understand the regret of knowing too much, perhaps her curiosity overcame being hurt. In the end she was too young to understand the answer in the first place.
"Oh honey." In an instant the shimmering lights had vanished from her eyes. A smile masked the hurt that should have sprouted in its place. "Because mommy made a big mistake. You'll understand when you're older." She looked downwards, her practiced facade neither broken nor disturbed. Words fell from her lips in a voice just above a hushed whisper.

"I just hope you don't repeat mommy's mistakes."

The words and imagery grew like great vines of a weed she did not ask for. It grew and grew and manifested in her mind a quiet understanding of what it was that her mother meant.
