Light.

I just realized how pitifully little people know about Piers’ childhood, so here we go.

Piers grew up with more than enough financially. Both his parents are successful business people, high in the tiers of business world; they rake in a plentiful amount of money. Sadly, this also leaves them little freedom to do more than work. With business meetings taking place around the world and barely a time for breaks in their hectic agendas they would have little time to raise a child. They really are just workaholics that enjoy money a little too much and have no business raising a child at all. There’s not too much of a reason for why they even had a child, perhaps it was the need for an heir to amass their gargantuan wealth, perhaps they just wanted a child for the sake of having a child, who knows. But of course taking care of the child wasn’t a problem to them; they were made of money after all.
Since a young age, Piers grew up under the care of various nannies, babysitters, and caretakers. They changed constantly, if he ended up liking one or becoming friends with one they would eventually just disappear, soon to be replaced by a stranger. For this reason Piers deeply valued the lasting companionship of others. And from this value came his motivation to later become a magi.
The only one that was ever always there was his pet robin, Caeli, the one that shares his middle name. She followed the boy everywhere he went, side by side, like best friends bound together at the ankles.
Piers went through preschool and kindergarten almost companionless. Nobody wanted to be friends with some overly rowdy kid with way too much energy for anyone to handle, who clamored for the attention of others and talked to the teachers more than his actual peers. Nobody stuck around to stay friends with the kid that always somehow managed to get in fights and always come home with scratches and bruises and mud caked on his face and in his red, matted hair. He may have been a good socializer and a loyal buddy, but nobody wanted to be associated with the lonely kid during Parents Day, nobody wanted to befriend the trouble maker. Just like his babysitters, friends came and went.
And so, the only one that remained with Piers was his little pet robin, who he’d carry around on his shoulder as he walked around his house, lost in his own little adventure with his only friend.
Some days it stormed and Piers would silently roll out of bed. Rub his little eyes and trudge over to the other side of his room. He'd turn on the night light and take Caeli, long asleep, out of her cage. He would return to his bed and wrap them both up in a blanket, the cold air warmed by the heat of their bodies and his soft breath. They would just sit there by the window as raindrops barraged and slid across the cold glass. And all he would hear was the silent thumping of the rain and their hearts until he finally managed to fall asleep.
